Steve Barylick, 2025

I paint on gessobord using Duo-brand water-based oil paints. The hard surface is very important for achieving the clean lines and shapes in my work.

In my art I’m looking to convey awareness of space, boundaries (real or imagined) and color relationships.

My early career in advertising as an art director and creative director developed my skill with order, placement and consistency.

Artists such as Morris Louis, Hans Hoffman, Mark Rothko, Frank Stella, Andrew Wyeth, Robert Motherwell, Helen Frankenthaler, Ellsworth Kelly, Kenneth Noland and others fascinated me with their spacial exploration, colors, textures and lack of so-called boundaries.

My earlier works were on canvas using acrylics. Making precise, sharp, clean lines was very challenging; the change to gessobord and water based oils was very revealing and worthwhile.

Upon leaving the safety of my advertising career, my wife suggested returning to my art roots. As frightening as that idea was, it became obvious that that was the right choice.

On reflection, I hope viewers will enjoy my art and come back often to visit.
